NEW ORLEANS, LA, FEBRUARY 10, 2015 – The U.S.-Angola Chamber of Commerce (USACC) in partnership with the Embassy of Angola in the United States organized the first of three, “Doing Business in Angola” (DBIA) sessions to promote the government of Angola’s National Development Plan and the upcoming Direct Trade Mission, March 20 – 28, 2015.

New Orleans Councilman James A. Gray, II provided welcoming remarks and stated, “I believe there are great opportunities for New Orleans companies in Angola, especially in port development. I hope that after today’s session, companies will be encouraged to go to Angola which will strengthen the business relationship between Louisiana and Angola. ”

In November 2014, the U.S. Export-Import Bank joined forces with the World Trade Center New Orleans to assist small and medium enterprises to access funding and U.S. Government export resources in order to trade internationally.

“There is already a Louisiana company that has accessed Ex-Im Bank facilities to work and trade with other African countries. We hope to encourage this company and other Louisiana companies to use the same facilities for Angola,” said Jeannine B. Scott, President of USACC.

The Angolan Ambassador to the U.S., His Excellency Agostinho da Silva Tavares Neto, was represented by Ana Beatriz Costa, Angola Trade Representative in the U.S. She outlined the government of Angola’s plan to establish import quotas on food and non-food products, providing a unique opportunity for investors interested in agribusiness, infrastructure, and logistical distribution centers. Costa also announced that starting in March 2015, the Angola Trade Office in the U.S. will organize monthly webinars focused on doing business in the 18 provinces of Angola.

The meeting also featured a video presentation which highlighted Angola’s economic growth and development achieved in its 40 years of independence and presentations from Angolan lawyer Lourdes Caposso Fernandes of LCF Group and Shannon Collins of the United States – Africa Energy Association.

Fernandes emphasized that, “Angola is interested in companies which want to invest in Angola not for the short term, but the medium to long term and are dedicated to improving the human capital of the country”.

The meeting was held in the offices of The Ehrhardt Group in New Orleans and sponsored by BP.

The next DBIA session will take place in Houston, Texas on Thursday February 12, 2015, followed by a session in Washington, DC on February 17, 2015.
