Buhari to Hold Talks with Niger Delta Militants

Tuesday, May 31, 2016

Muhammadu Buhari, Nigeria’s president, in a televised speech, said that talks between the government and leaders in the Niger Delta would be held to address grievances. The launch of talks follows several attacks on various foreign operated oil installations in the Niger Delta, which has shut in a considerable amount of Nigeria’s production.

While Buhari is willing to discuss the communities’ grievances, the army will still be cracking down on militant action in the region.

The citizens in the Niger Delta want a bigger share of the oil wealth that comes from their communities. They also want the oil firms operating there to clean up the pollution that oil production has caused.

“The recent spate of attacks by militants disrupting oil and power installations will not distract us from engaging leaders in the region in addressing Niger Delta problems,” President Muhammadu Buhari said in his speech.

Adding that the government was committed to cleaning up polluted areas of the Niger Delta. “I believe the way forward is to take a sustainable approach to address the issues that affect the Delta communities.”
