CNPC Appeals for Chad to Reconsider

Friday, August 15, 2014

In response to Chad’s claim against CNPC in a Paris arbitration court, the Chinese firm has appealed to the nation’s government to cancel the $1.2 billion suit. The suit filed by Chad revolves around environmental violations at CNPC’s oil operations in the country.

In a statement to Reuters, the Chinese firm said that the oil leaked consisted of a “small amount” and said its own analysis did not show penetration into the ground water. The company added that it hoped the government would reverse its decision regarding the arbitration and “resolve this negotiation amicably.”

CNPC also told Reuters that the Chadian government had declined to provide the firm with a breakdown of damage to justify the large claim.
