The natural gas discovery made by ENI offshore Mozambique last week has just gotten bigger. The company said that the Mamba South-1 is about 50% larger than what was originally announced.
ENI found a new separate pool while deepening the well that potentially contains up to 7.5 Tcf of gas-in-place in clean sands from the Eocene age. The new section contains about 295 ft of gross gas pay.
The Italian firm will drill the well to a total depth of about 16,404 ft. Following the completion of drilling on the Mamba South-1 well the company will move the rig to drill the second commitment well, Mamba North-1.
ENI expects that the unprecedented potential of Tertiary Play existing in Area 4 will be further defined in the forthcoming appraisal campaign.
Furthermore, the operator has stated that front-end activities on the discovery have commenced. ENI believes that the discovery can hold up to 22.5 Tcf of gas-in-place in the Mamba South Area.
ENI operates the area with a 70% interest, Galp Energia holds 10%, KOGAS holds 10%, and ENH holds 10%, carried through the exploration phase.
