On August 23 Fluor Corporation announced that it was selected by South Africa’s Sasol Ltd. to perform project management, engineering, procurement and construction services for the off-sites and utilities portion of refinery upgrades at Sasol’s Secunda facility. The award has an estimated value of $176 million.
The contract for Fluor is the latest in a series of awards made by Sasol for its major clean fuels initiative, Project Turbo. Project Turbo is aimed at meeting stricter South African clean fuels standards, due to take effect in January 2006. It includes a number of facility upgrades as well as new plants to expand production of marketable polymers.
Fluor was selected in 2003 to be Project Turbo’s managing contractor for the basic design and engineering, procurement and construction management phases, including the procurement of bulk materials. In addition to that role, Fluor is currently performing engineering, procurement and construction management services for off-sites and utilities at Sasol's Midlands facility near Sasolburg.
