Plans to construct an oil refinery in Tunisia are being brought back to life. The refinery has been on the books for a number of years following a tender to firms to build the country’s first privately run refinery in 2007.
Qatar Petroleum initially won the bid to develop the $2 billion refinery but the project has languished until recently. According to reports Qatar has revived plans to build own and run the refinery.
"Qatar will implement the Skhira refinery project," Qatari Minister of State for International Cooperation Khalid Mohamed al-Attiyah told reporters in Tunisia. Attiyah said the cost of the project was "very large" and it may require another partner, but declined to give more details.
The refinery will have an initial capacity of 120,000 bpd, eventually increasing to 250,000 bpd.
