CGGVeritas is reportedly looking for hydrocarbons in a 121,000-sq km area of South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) coast. Earlier this month CGGVeritas reported that Petroleum Agency of South Africa (PASA) had accepted its application for a reconnaissance permit off the KZN coastline, subject to the approval of an environmental management plan.
Local news source The Cape Times said that the company planned 2D seismic tests to gauge the area’s hydrocarbon potential during Q1 2013. The planned 2D seismic survey will need to meet some stringent environmental parameters as a number of sea mammals, such as dolphins and whales traverse the block during certain periods of the year.
Cape Town consultancy firm CCA Environmental has asked that members of the public who have concerns about the exploration project submit their comments before July 25.
