Partners in Ghana on the Deepwater Tano Block have recorded another discovery. Drilling of the Wawa-1 well resulted in the discovery of oil and gas condensate. The well encountered approximately 43 net ft of oil pay and 65 net ft of gas-condensate pay in Turonian-aged reservoirs.
Samples from the well show the oil is of good quality, between 38 and 44◦ API, and pressure data indicate the Wawa discovery is a separate and distinct accumulation from the adjacent TEN (Tweneboa, Enyenra and Ntomme) complex.
The Wawa-1 exploration well is located in approximately 1,926 ft of water. The well was drilled to a total depth of approximately 10,899 ft. Once operations are complete, the well will be suspended for possible future use in appraisal and development operations.
The Deepwater Tano is operated by Tullow Oil and partners include Kosmos Energy and Anadarko Petroleum Corp. Sabre Oil & Gas Holdings Ltd. and the Ghana National Petroleum Corp. also hold minority stakes in the block.
Commenting on the discovery, Angus McCoss, Tullow’s exploration director, said:"Wawa-1 was the first of three important remaining exploration wells to be drilled in the second half of 2012, to close out the exploration phase of the Deepwater Tano Licence. It found light oil and gas condensate, trapped separately from TEN and demonstrates once again that liquid rich hydrocarbons are pervasive in this prospective licence. We look forward to the drilling of Okure and Sapele in the second half of 2012."
"The Wawa discovery extends the presence of hydrocarbon-bearing formations more than 6 miles (10 kilometers) to the north of the Enyenra-3A well," said Anadarko Sr. VP, International and Deepwater Exploration, Bob Daniels. "The discovery enhances the value of the TEN complex, which is advancing toward submission of a plan of development. The partnership plans further exploration of the Deepwater Tano Block with additional wells scheduled at our Okure and Sapele prospects later this year."
Paul Dailly, Senior VP of Exploration, stated, "Success at Wawa continues the strong exploration results for our partnership offshore Ghana and extends the area of discovered resources on Deepwater Tano. We look forward to the remainder of our meaningful 2012 exploration campaign in Ghana, which includes the Okure and Sapele prospects. At the same time, we are also preparing to spud our first operated well in Cameroon at the Sipo prospect by the end of the year, and we are aggressively pursuing significant exploration opportunities in our positions offshore Morocco, Suriname, and Mauritania."
