Kenya Electoral Commission Deluged by Court Cases

Thursday, July 20, 2017

Kenya’s election commission is being bombarded with court cases, with more than 300 being filed. The court cases are being filed by candidates, parties, and civil society groups on the run up to the August 8 election. This deluge has caused concern as to whether the disputes can be resolved in time for the election.

The August 8 election will see President Uhuru Kenyatta once again go against Raila Odinga, the veteran opposition leader. Any doubts over the legality of the elections could spark protests by candidates contesting presidential, legislative or local seats. Odinga has said that the last two elections, both marred by irregularities, were rigged.

The government says the legal battles are an attempt to delay the elections and pave the way for power-sharing. “If that date is vacated, this republic will be thrown into a constitutional crisis,” Attorney General Githu Muigai said before the high court.
