Militants Attack Police Positions in Cabo Delgado Province

Tuesday, October 10, 2017

An attack on police positions in Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province, where international firms are developing a LNG export scheme, have left a number of officers dead, according to authorities.

Inacio Dina, spokesman for the General Command, said the militants attacked three police positions and stole weapons in Mocímboa da Praia district, 49 miles from the future site of LNG gas terminals to be built by Italy’s ENI and US independent Anadarko Petroleum.

“There were more than 30 men holding AK47s. The targets were police and military positions” said Dina. The latest death toll reported was 16 officers.

Authorities think the fighters belong to a cell of Al Shabaab militant group, but this has not been confirmed.

Police say two members of the group were detained and three others killed during the attack.
