Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan confirmed at his Peoples Democratic Party headquarters that he will run in the next presidential election scheduled for February. He thanked supporters and state governors who helped raise the $130,000 nomination fee required to enter the race.
However, many feel that the president has failed to properly handle the 219 schoolgirls that were kidnapped from Chibok in April by Islamist militant group Boko Haram. The group’s leader, Abubakar Shekau, said the girls have converted to Islam and have been married off to Muslim men. The Nigerian administration said that a peace agreement had been brokered on October 17, but Shekau denied the claim.
