Nigeria Serves Shell $3.9 Billion Damage Tab

Thursday, November 27, 2014

In Nigeria the country’s National Assembly has determined that Royal Dutch Shell should pay up $3.9 billion in damages for the 2011 Bonga oil spill offshore Nigeria.

The National Assembly’s non-binding assessment was determined after years of analysis by various Nigerian state agencies.

Shell declined to comment. The company has previously said it took responsibility for the spill and had cleaned the area.

The Bonga oil spill saw around 40,000 barrels spilled when a tanker was loading crude at the offshore platform operated by Shell’s subsidiary SNEPCO.
