Release

After much deliberation following the highest ever level of entries, OPITO has today announced the finalists for the 2014 global safety and competency awards.

Shell Malaysia Exploration & Production, Stork and Shell Philippines Exploration BV have been short-listed in the employers’ category which recognises employers who have best demonstrated their commitment to building a safe and competent workforce.

M&O Indonesia, Wild Geese Solutions and Falck Prime Atlantic Nigeria are the finalists in the category for training providers which recognises commitment to developing the skills of their staff to deliver OPITO training.

The OPITO international awards, now in their fifth year, are presented at the annual OSCC (OPITO Safety and Competence Conference) in Abu Dhabi on the 4th November.

OPITO group chief executive, David Doig, said: “We are immensely gratified to have received our highest number of entries for these awards, which have become highly coveted within the industry since their inception in 2010. The quality of the nominations demonstrate a real desire by both employers and training providers to develop a competent, skilled and safe workforce with assured competence to OPITO standards.”

Shell Malaysia is committed to building its capability and competence of people managing health, safety and security risks. Through the adoption of OPITO standards, particularly in relation to OIM and control room operator training, Shell Malaysia has seen increased business performance and improvements in meeting all HSSE key performance indicators for offshore operations.

Stork has developed and successfully rolled out a robust and measurable competency management process which has seen the development of new standards in partnership with OPITO, improved staff motivation and performance, reduced frequency and severity of incidents and accidents.

Recognising that the success of Shell Philippines Exploration’s Malampaya deepwater gas to power project relies on the skills, knowledge and safety of the people involved, the organisation has adopted OPITO standards as mandatory to ensure safety and competence, particularly in relation to the local Filipino workforce. To date, 6,000 people have been enrolled in training, with 2,500 trained in basic safety awareness, 375 in safety leadership and 2,700 in training for working at height and in confined spaces. But most importantly the project has reported zero lost time incidents in 3,000 days.

M&O Indonesia is a division of PT Australian Skills Training – a Wood Group company that provides industrial skills training to Australian standards as well as an OPITO-approved training centre. The combination of their train the trainer programme, peer assessment, training matrix to demonstrate competency and programme of educational visits to yards, vessels, helicopters and offshore installation is delivering highly effective competent indigenous trainers throughout the Malaysian region.

Wild Geese Solutions, based in Kuala Lumpur, has a strong track record in training oil and gas workers. Their internal competency development programme allows them to measure the quality of their teaching and how what is being taught is actually used in the offshore environment. Through their Cold Eye Observation programme, their instructors regularly visit offshore operations to show clients how the OPITO standards fit into the expected roles and responsibilities.

Falck Prime Atlantic Nigeria was the first training provider in Africa to receive OPITO accreditation to deliver basic offshore safety induction and emergency training. Falck’s skill and competence development training programme for staff comprises three phases: mandatory training, jobs specific training and portfolio development. They have launched a series of instructional videos of actual training sessions delivered by their most experienced trainers to share best practice.

The OSCC was introduced in 2009 as a way to bring operators, contractors and the supply chain together with training organisations to provide a forum for improving standards of safety and competency that protect the workforce and the industry’s reputation.

Upwards of 400 delegates from around the world are expected to attend the event which will be opened by the UAE energy minister, Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei.
