PASA to Recommend Shale Gas Licenses

Wednesday, May 17, 2017

The South African government will soon see recommendations for the issuance of its first shale gas exploration licenses in the Karoo Basin. Companies have been waiting in limbo for a number of years for the country’s regulator, PASA, to give the go ahead after environmental concerns delayed the process.

Companies like Shell, Falcon Oil and Gas, and Bundu Gas & Oil are among the five applications currently under the PASA review process.

PASA will make recommendations to the Ministry of Mineral Resources, which will take a final decision on the licenses, according to a Reuters report. It is anticipated that a determination on the licenses will be taken in Q2 or Q3 of this year.
