Pipeline Damaged in Libya

Wednesday, February 3, 2016

Libya saw a pipeline south the Zueitina port damaged in an attack. While it is unclear as to whether the attack was carried out by ISIS militants, the group has been playing havoc on the country’s oil infrastructure and has recently been active in the area.

The export terminal was closed in 2015 due to a conflict between Libya’s rival governments.

According to Mustafa Sanalla, head of NOC, Libya is already an estimated $68 billion down in oil sales due to political infighting that began in 2013.

In an AP report Sanalla expressed the belief that Libya would fall further into a chaos if its factions do not form a unity government quickly. He argued that without a single government, there would be “neither security nor stability;” and “this vacuum will permit the other terrorist group and extremist groups to step in.”
