Prison Break in Nigeria

Monday, December 8, 2014

At a prison near Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, gunmen broke into the prison and freed a significant number of inmates. According to reports gunmen stormed the facility located in the Nigerian city of Minna, freeing around 200 of the inmates on December 7.

While the Boko Haram and the al Qaeda-linked group Ansaru have been behind several prison raids in the past, it is not clear as to whether either one was behind this prison break.

“It’s unclear if this is Boko Haram or some criminal gangs,” a security source was quoted as saying in a Reuters report. “I doubt there were many high profile Boko Haram suspects being held in Minna.”

The is the second prison break in two months; in November gunmen used explosives to blow their way into a prison in the city of Lokoja, killing one person and freeing 144 inmates.
