Strides Energy Unveils Pipelay in Nigeria

Monday, September 29, 2014

Strides Energy and Maritime Ltd. unveiled its 1,000-ton pipelay barge at the Abuloma Jetty, built wholly in Nigeria. Moritz Abazie, the MD and CEO of the firm, said the Strides 111 was built by the company’s contractor Mike Biks Nigeria Ltd. under the supervision of a team of Strides engineers.

“The lay barge construction, lasted for a total of 90 days with a workforce of 30 persons consisting of welders, fitters, electricians, painters, corrosion engineers, mechanical engineers, HSE personnel, and QA.QC engineers,’” said Abazie. He went on to say that the pipelay vessel has the capacity to lay between two and 16-inch sizes in swamp locations. “She is fully equipped with necessary facilities for swamp oil and gas pipeline fabrication and installation.”

According to Stride, the vessel with its 1,000 ton capacity, though built in Nigeria, remains the biggest in the entire Niger Delta. Abazie told the oil and gas stakeholders that the need to execute a new but bigger contract from Chevron pushed the company to think out of the box. “We built this barge because we have a contract with Chevron and we could not find 1000T barge around. Wema Bank is our strategic partner,” he said.
