Tankers Need Permission to Approach Ras Lanuf Terminal

Friday, July 10, 2015

In an effort to keep control of exports out of the recently reopened Ras Lanuf oil port, the internationally recognized government of Libya has warned that it will seize control of any tankers approaching the port without permission.

The state-run firm operating NOC operating out of Tripoli (unrecognized government) recently lifted the force majeure on the Ras Lanuf terminal, which had been shut in since December do to fighting between factions. However the NOC of the recognized government said the force majeure remains in effect.

The official NOC’s chairman, Yousef Bu Saifi, told Reuters the force majeure was still in effect and orders have been given to the Petroleum Facilities Guard or PFG at Ras Lanuf to intercept any tankers. “We have asked the PFG to intercept any tankers trying to approach the oilfields for security and technical reasons. The force majeure is still in place,” he said.
