Total Exploring DRC Block 3

Sunday, February 7, 2016

Total launched a seismic survey in the northeastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Block 3. The block is located on the DRC’s border with Uganda along Lake Albert.

The company holds a 66.66% stake in Block 6, partnered with Semliki Sarl which is majority owned by SacOil.

The French firm acquired the license in early-2012 but has been unable to launch an exploration program due to the insecurity of the area. Preliminary exploration on blocks near Block 3 suggest the area could hold significant reserves.

Besides the insecurity of the area, one-third of the block lies in the DRC’s Virunga National Park, and activists have protested any exploration taking place inside the park. Total has promised not to explore in or near the Virunga National Park.
