Transnet to Reveal Preferred Port Bidders by September

Tuesday, January 27, 2015

South Africa should see the announcement of Transnet’s preferred bidders for a new jetty and deepwater oil rig repair quay at Saldanha Port on the country’s west coast. Transnet, South Africa’s state-owned logistics group, said the preferred bidders would be revealed by September.

The location of the port could offer a cost savings for oil firms operating on both the west and east coast of Africa. Currently a significant amount of rig work takes place at repair hubs in Europe and Singapore.

Transnet and government officials were quoted in a Reuters report as saying the drop in crude prices was a temporary setback and firms were still keen to build a new jetty and rig repair quay. The projects are due to be commissioned by 2018.
