Uganda Ready for Licensing Round

Friday, February 13, 2015

Acreage is expected to be put up for offer in Uganda as the country’s cabinet is reported to have approved plans to launch a licensing round. While the switch from one-on-one negotiations is a positive, the timing could leave something to be desired as most firms are tightening their respective belts until crude prices straiten themselves out.

The licensing round will offer six exploration blocks in the Albertine Basin for licensing. These blocks include the Semiliki and Kanywataba blocks in the Ntoroko district, the Ngassa in Hoima district, the Taitai and Karuka in the Buliisa district, the Mvule in Yumbe and Moyo districts, the Ngaji in Kanungu and Rukungiri districts.

Uganda’s Minister of Energy, Simon D’ujanga, said that preparations have begun to issue the blocks in line with the Petroleum Act, 2013 which provides for licensing through open, transparent, and competitive bidding. “The government plans to invite companies to participate in this licensing round during the first quarter of 2015,” he said in a statement to parliament.
