Workers Launch Strike Against NNPC

Thursday, September 18, 2014

Oil worker unions in Nigeria launched a strike on September 16 and the strike continued on into the next day. The strike is over a disagreement with the government over pensions and a lack of crude supplied to refineries.

Babatunde Oke, spokesman for the white-collar workers’ union Pengassan, told Reuters by text message on September 17 that “the strike is still on, as no agreement had been reached.”

At this time the only company affected by the strike is state-run oil firm NNPC, as only the workers for the company are participating in the action, although the strike could become industry wide and in that case a whole host of companies would be affected.

According to the Reuters report, there has been no impact on exports so far, but a bigger risk might be with fuel shortages if tanker drivers refuse to supply gasoline stations with imported fuel.
