African Union Passport Launched

Thursday, July 21, 2016

At the 27th Ordinary Session of the African Union Assembly of Heads of State and Government on July 17 at the Kigali Convention Center in Rwanda, came the launch of the African Union (AU) passport aimed at facilitating the free movement of people on the continent.

IdrissDebyItno, Chairperson of the AU and President of the Republic of Chad, and President Paul Kagame of the Republic of Rwanda received the first passports handed to them by the Chairperson of the AU Commission, H.E. Dr. NkosazanaDlamini Zuma.

“I feel deeply and proudly a true son of Africa after receiving this passport,” said President IdrissDeby while stressing the importance of fast tracking integration on the continent to achieve socio-economic growth for the wellbeing of the African citizens.

The new African Union passports aim to facilitate ease of movement throughout the continent without the need for visas. There are two types of passports – one for government officials and frequent business travelers, and the other for everyone else. It is unknown when the passport will roll out to all African citizens as only 13 of 55 nations do not have a visa requirement at present. The remainder of the nations must pass independent legislation for this scheme to come fully to fruition and it has already been on the table for 25 years.
