Countries in Africa participating in this year’s Summer Olympics in Brazil are off to a slow start, with only three African countries scoring medals as of the morning of August 10. Egypt, South Africa and Tunisia have made it to the podium with five wins in total.
Egypt’s Sara Ahmed won a bronze medal for her performance in Weightlifting in the Women’s 69 KG, Group A. Ahmed lifted 255 kg in the finals to win her medal. Also in weightlifting, Mohamed Ihab won the bronze in Men’s Group A with his lifting of 361 kg.
South Africa has won two silver medals to date, both in swimming. Cameron van der Burgh came in second in the finals for the Men’s 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 58.69 seconds. The country’s second medal came from Chad le Clos in the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 1:45.20.
Tunisia’s Ines Boubakri is taking home the bronze for her performance in the Women’s Individual Foil. She won her bronze medal bout against Russia’s Aida Shanaeva with a score of 15-11.
