Another attack on Egypt’s East Med Gas Pipeline (EMG) in the north Sinai Peninsula region took place late Sunday night. Reports have it that armed men attacked the pipeline that connects Egypt and Israel. An ISIS affiliate claimed responsibility stating it had detonated a number of explosives next to a pipeline linking “the Jews” and “the apostate Egyptian government.”
This trunk of the pipeline carries gas from Israel’s Leviathan gas field in the East Mediterranean to meet Egypt’s domestic demand in el-Arish and the central Sinai region. Israel began exporting natural gas last month from the Leviathan field, which commenced operations on January 6 and targets to export 64 Bcm to Egypt per annum.
Authorities from both Egypt and Israel state that there were no casualties or damage and reported that gas continued to flow while investigations were ongoing.
