Chad to Review Environmental Practices

Wednesday, August 21, 2013

The government of Chad has ordered an environmental audit of all crude oil explorations in the country after suspending CNPC’s operations for violating environmental standards. According to reports, CNPC spilled thousands of barrels of oil at one of its operations in the country.

The country’s oil minister, Djerassem Le Bemadjiel, said that the government plans to reevaluate all oil activities to ensure that regulations are being met. He also added that CNPC’s activities will remain suspended until it fulfils the environmental requirements.

CNPC “did not even have a truck to suck the spilled crude. They dug trenches and poured the crude and then asked Chadian employees to scoop it with cups. In which other country have you seen such practices?” said Le Bemadjiel according to a Reuters report.

The government will reassess all operators to ensure best practices are being used during the exploration and production of crude in the country. The government will also reassess all environmental management plans signed with operators.

A senior official at the oil ministry told Reuters that auditors Alex Stewart International was appointed to carry out the audit.
