CONNERSVILLE, Ind–Powerful, high-capacity Dresser® ROOTS® compressors manufactured by Dresser, Inc., a leader in providing reliable, highly engineered infrastructure products for the global energy industry, are essential components in the environmental protection systems of two large petroleum processing projects.
In Qatar, ROOTS compressors are being installed in a plant that is using gas-to-liquids technology (GTL) to transform natural gas into clean-burning synthetic diesel fuel.
In Canada, ROOTS compressors are destined for a project that is extracting oil from tar sands.
Though the production processes of each project are very different, they have a common need to ensure that waste matter generated by the production process is handled in a manner that protects the environment.
In each application, the ROOTS units compress steam in the evaporator systems that remove pollutants from the liquid wastes generated by the production processes. The evaporation process produces clean water which can be reused and solid wastes that can be disposed of in a responsible manner. Compressing the steam also provides higher heat value that reduces the amount of energy required to run the evaporation process.
“Increasingly sophisticated systems are being used to extract the maximum amount of energy from available resources,” said Gary Redelman, global director, engineering and business development for Roots. “At the same time there is a growing global awareness of the need to do this in a manner that also protects the environment. Dresser ROOTS products have a vital role in these green initiatives.”
Underscoring the importance of compressor reliability within these evaporator systems in modern production processes, Redelman noted that a shutdown of the waste stream clean-up system at either facility could shut down production entirely.
The Qatar plant is a huge facility requiring an equally large waste management process. Three 9,000 hp (6,700 kW) ROOTS OIB 260 compressors, each rated at 230,000 cfm (390,000 M3/H) have been specified for the project.
The Canadian tar sands project will utilize a 2,500 hp (1,900 kW) ROOTS OIB 260 compressor, rated at 175,000cfm (297,000 M3/H), and a 1,250 hp (930 kW) ROOTS OIB 75 compressor rated at 40,000 cfm (68,000 M3/H).
