By continuing to allow private enterprises to participate in the exploration of the Ogaden Basin, the Ethiopian Ministry of Mines and Energy is intensifying its oil exploration efforts in the country. The Ministry has offered a tender asking for the exploration of blocks 7 & 8 of the Ogaden Basin, which are believed to contain substantial amounts of oil reserves.
Lundin East Africa B.V. is the latest company to be given the green light by the Council of Ministers to explore and develop natural gas in Ogaden area in Somali State. Moreover, the government awarded a contract to Petronas which allows the Malaysian firm to prospect for oil in the Ogaden, Kelafo, Welwel Werderna and Genale woredas of the Somali region.
