Ghana’s Sunon Asogli Powers Up

Tuesday, July 23, 2013

In Ghana the Sunon Asogli Power Plant, after being shut in for 11 months, has resumed full operations. The plant was able to restart production after natural gas once again began flowing through the West Africa Gas Pipeline (WAGP).

Operations at the company ground to a halt in August 2012 as a result of damage to WAGP which supplies gas from Nigeria to the plant. The shut in resulted in power shortages in Ghana.

Chairman of the Sunon Asogli Power Ghana Ltd (SAPGL), Li Xiaohai, told the Daily Graphic during a tour of the facility that gas, arrived on July 13 and that the company resumed operations that day. By the following day power generation hit 180 MW, 20 MW short of its full capacity. According to Li the plant was unable to generate to its full capacity because of the weather.

“Although it is a 200-MW plant, we are generating 180 MW because of the hot weather. If the weather becomes cooler or cold, we can operate at 200 megawatts. The temperature has to be at 15°C or below for us to operate at full capacity and that is difficult to achieve in Ghana,” he said.
