GoM Rig Explosion Update: Loss of Life, Rig Sinks

Friday, April 23, 2010

An explosion took place Tuesday night in the US Gulf of Mexico (GoM) off the coast of Louisiana. The explosion took place on Transocean’s Deepwater Horizon mobile offshore drilling unit under lease to BP. The rig, which had 126 people onboard, is located offshore Louisiana on Mississippi Canyon block 252. Hope for finding the 11 missing crew members is dimming.

The Deepwater Horizon is an approximate half-million dollar drilling unit which recently set world records for drilling depths. The fire continued to blaze on the rig and it sunk into the ocean yesterday. It is reported that around 13,000 barrels of crude oil per hour are being dumped into the ocean. A remote operated vehicle (ROV), capable of cruising the sea floor, was deployed to shut off flow from the well on Thursday.

According to the US Coast Guard seven people were critically injured and many more sustained injuries of varying degree in the explosion and were emergency lifted to medical facilities. 11 people are still missing from the rig and search efforts are still underway.

Transocean reported the fire onboard the Deepwater Horizon on Tuesday and said that its Emergency and Family Response Teams were working with the US Coast Guard and BP to care for all rig personnel and search for missing rig personnel. The names and hometowns of injured persons are being withheld until family members can be notified.

The cause of the blast is not yet known and Mike O’Berry, Chief Petty Officer in the US Coast Guard told CNN that the cause hasn’t been looked into yet as the main priority to start with was search and rescue. Following search and rescue any environmental issues will be taken care of and then the cause of the fire/explosion will be looked into.
