Indian Workers Bail from Nigeria

Wednesday, June 13, 2007

Due to the recent kidnappings of Indian workers in Nigeria, at least 120 Indians working for the Eleme Petrochemical Company have either left the country or relocated. The government of India confirmed that on June 5, 12 Indians, including two women and two children, belonging to private company INDORAMA were abducted.

"The majority of expatriate Indians — mostly engineers and technicians — have relocated, mostly as a result of the attacks. The majority have gone back to India," spokesman of the Eleme Petrochemical Company, Jose Nkwocha said.

On June 7, Nigerian President Uman Yar’adua had assured his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh of safe and speedy return of the hostages on the sidelines of the G-8 summit of outreach nations.
