Kiir Orders Halt to White Nile and Ascom Operations

Wednesday, May 30, 2007

Salva Kiir, President of the Governement of South Sudan (GoSS) took a bold step this week to quell tensions over the duplication of block awards to different companies by issuing a resolution that effectively freezes the operations of White Nile and Ascom in Southern Sudan.

On May 29 Petroleum Africa reported that tensions were rising between the two groups as the Joint Executive Committee meeting of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), and the National Congress Party (NCP) concluded thier meeting without coming up with a substantive agreement as to how to end the dispute over White Niles’ award of Block Ba and Ascom’s award of Block 5B.

Kiir’s resolution also adds that an investigation committee be formed to probe the contract signed with White Nile and check up on its technical ability. The latter point may be moot as the UK company already began drilling on the block on April 19, showing that it has the ability to hire technically capable people.
