MEND Calls for Militant Unity Against Government

Tuesday, December 18, 2007

Nigeria’s number one militant group, the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) had called on all militant groups to join forces and cripple the country’s main revenue generating industry. "We call on all genuine militant groups to unite and cripple the oil industry in Nigeria once and for all and stand strong to face a common enemy," the group said in a statement e-mailed to reporters. "The time has come for all breakaway factions to come together and wage war of a different kind in 2008."

Bombings, kidnappings, and attacks since early 2006 by MEND have already cut 25-30% of Nigeria‘s estimated 2.5 million barrels per day production of crude oil.

The group announced a unilateral cease-fire shortly after the May 29 inauguration of new President Umaru Yar’Adua, but later called off the truce. However, a period of six months is hardly enough time to do anything concret,e and unfortunately for Nigeria’s oil industry the militants are not very patient. Yar’Adua’s government has made some efforts to reach out to militants; however the response he has received has not been altogether encouraging.

MEND applauded the withdrawal of ethnic Ijaw fighters from peace talks.
