MEND Extends Threats to Nigeria

Thursday, September 18, 2008

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) has threatened to expand its war in the Niger Delta to offshore fields, heading out of the Rivers State. The threat comes as battles between the military and militants enter their sixth day.

"After Rivers, the hurricane will be heading to the neighboring states in the Niger Delta," MEND said in an e-mailed statement. "Soldiers and oil workers are advised to abandon all oil facilities including the offshore rigs of Bonga and Agbami as we want to minimize casualties," MEND said.

According to a report from Vanguard, the Joint Task Force (JTF) in Rivers State got a bit of its own back on September 17 when it killed 12 militants in a gun battle at Soku. A spokesman for the Navy said the naval men were on routine patrol when the militants suddenly opened fire on them at a spot on the waterway. During the ensuing gun battle, the Navy sank the militants’ boats. “Our boat was on routine marine patrol in Soku area. We ran into them and they immediately opened fire on us. We later subdued them. We destroyed their boat,” the spokesman said.

The battles between military and militants have led to Governor Rotimi Amaechi to declare a state of emergency in the region.
