MEND Promises to Unleash

Monday, June 8, 2009

Over the weekend the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) warned oil workers in the southern Niger Delta to leave within 72 hours to avoid an "imminent attack."

In an emailed statement the militant group said “This is a final warning from the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) to local and foreign workers in the oil services and exploration companies to vacate the region within the next 72 hours due to an imminent attack.”

According to the statement the group will not discriminate when it wreaks havoc across the region “we will not discriminate on tribe, nationality, or race when it sweeps across the region,” in the attack they have dubbed ‘Hurricane Piper Alpha’.

MEND added: "The warning also applies to greedy individuals from oil communities tempted to carry out repair contracts on pipelines already destroyed."

"A word is enough for the wise!", it warned.

There have often been threats against the oil industry in the past but rarely has any of the doom and gloom promised materialized, only localized attacks have been seen.

Petroleum Africa has conducted an exclusive interview with MEND spokesman Jomo Gbomo which will be published in the June print issue of the monthly magazine. In addition, coverage on the Nigerian government’s position, along with the JTF’s efforts, will be highlighted.
