Mozambique saw another attack by Islamist insurgents not far from the site where French major Total is developing its liquid natural gas (LNG) facility on Wednesday. According to a statement from the country’s Ministry of Defense, the attack took place about 21 kms from the site of Total’s project LNG project in the northern Cabo Delgado province.
The statement said that its security forces repelled the attack and accused the militants of trying to derail the investment. The militants are said to be aligned with Islamic State and have increasingly become more aggressive in the region, seizing the port town of Mocimboa da Praia in August, the third such time they have been able to capture this port.
In August, the government and Total signed an agreement on security which will see the pair cooperate on security issues to protect the $23 billion natural gas project under development.
Since 2017, attacks have intensified in the north of the country resulting in more than 1,000 lives lost. Mozambique’s defense forces are working to eradicate the militant group but says they are using local populations as shields.
