Nigeria and Shell Accused of Lack of Action

Tuesday, August 5, 2014

The Nigerian government and Shell have come under attack once again for what NGOs and environmental groups say is their failure to clean up the pollution in the Niger Delta caused by oil spills.

According to reports oil spills have contaminated the drinking water in at least 10 communities in Ogoniland and nothing is being done to clean this up despite the fact that Shell has been prevented by opposition from operating in the area since the 1990s.

More recent spills on Shell assets in the Niger Delta have been attributed to sabotage and oil theft. Whether the spills were indeed due to sabotage and oil theft or were the result of maintenance issues by Shell, no effort by either the company or the Nigerian government to clean them up has been made, according to Amnesty International and other groups.

In a report, Amnesty International, Friends of the Earth and other groups expose the continuing lack of action by either party in cleaning up Ogoniland, despite the recommendations made by the UN Environment Program three years ago.
