Nigeria Wants $42 Million from Julius Berger

Friday, April 24, 2009

The Nigerian government is looking for Julius Berger to pay it around $42 million after it failed to finish a major road project in the Niger Delta. Julius Berger is the Nigerian unit of German builder Bilfinger Berger.

Bilfinger Berger pulled out of the Niger Delta following the abduction of two of its employees.

"The Federal Executive Council today approved that Julius Berger be asked to refund the sum of 6.1 billion naira that had been the balance of advance payment made to the company in respect to the east-west road contract," Information Minister Dora Akunyili told reporters.

She said the firm received the initial road contract in 2005, worth 220 billion naira. A Julius Berger spokesman said it was still in discussions with the government over the terminated project. The company had been working on rebuilding the main east-west road across the region, but the contract has since been terminated and given to local engineering firm Setraco.

“I can confirm we are now finalizing the close out of the project. It is normal procedure to reconcile outstanding project issues,” the spokesman said.
