Nigeria’s Akpo Flows Early

Friday, March 6, 2009

Reports coming out of Nigeria have the Akpo deepwater field operated by France’s Total coming online. A senior official was quoted by Reuters as saying that oil began flowing two or three days ago, several weeks ahead of schedule.

A little over one month ago Mohammed Sansusi Barkindo, the newly appointed head of Nigeria’s state-owned NNPC, while speaking at the Offshore West Africa 09 conference in Abuja, said that the Akpo was due to begin producing in April.

Akpo, discovered in 2000, lies in deepwater off the coast of Port Harcourt on OML 130. Total began developing the Akpo Field in May 2005. The field development includes 22 producing wells, 20 water injection wells, and two gas injection wells, tied back to an FPSO with a storage capacity of two million barrels.

Peak production for the field is estimated at 225,000 boepd, with nearly 80% of that being condensate. The condensate will be exported via a buoy from the FPSO. The gas will be piped 90 miles to the Amenam/Kpono gas production platform; from there, it will be sent via pipeline to the Bonny liquefaction plant.
