Oryx GTL

Monday, September 8, 2008

Sasol reported that the “majority of teething problems” from its Oryx gas-to-liquids (GTL) project in Qatar are under control.  The company said the plant realized an increase in production flows, operating at an average of above 22,000 bpd. It did note however, that it is still down 54% from the original projections of 34,000 bpd and that it would take time to deliver those outputs.

The $1 billion facility, a JV with Sasol and Qatar Petroleum, came onstream in January 2007, but five months later, Sasol announced difficulties as a result of high levels of a fine material being produced in the Fischer-Tropsch process.

In a statement released together with the group’s year-end results, Sasol said: “With the majority of teething problems behind us, the ramp up of the Oryx GTL plant in Qatar met our expectations during the year.”
