The Minister of Energy and Mineral Development of Uganda, through the Directorate of Petroleum, has been carrying out geological, geochemical and geophysical mapping in the Moroto-Kadam Basin, Karamoja region. This region is located not too far from Kenya’s oil producing Lokichar Basin where Tullow Oil has discovered 700 million barrels of oil to date.
A Ministry spokesperson told Petroleum Africa that to date, about 35-40% of the basin has been covered by the studies and that work is ongoing.
“The work done so far shows evidence of the possible presence of a working petroleum system as demonstrated by the encountered oil seep and potential source rocks. More work will be focused on covering the entire basin so that a comprehensive geological basin model is developed to enable more definitive speculative and exploration licensing activities,” the source said.
