Nigeria has transformed its Petroleum Training Institute (PTI) into the University of Petroleum Engineering. The announcement came from the Executive Secretary of the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF), Alhaji Adamu Maina Waziri. He also announced that approval had come through for the upgrade of the facilities to bring it in line with the government’s resolution to meet the global challenges of the oil and gas industry.
Speaking yesterday at the signing of the contract agreement for consultancy services for the upgrade, Waziri said the contract has suffered delays due to changes in management of the fund. "The contract suffers a lot of setback as a result of the inconsistent policies and changes in leadership" he said.
While PTI currently has petroleum engineering faculty supervised by the University of Benin, additional infrastructure will be needed to meet the needs of a full fledged university. According to Waziri "Because some of the facilities that are obtained in our Universities were still the ones we used in the seventies, the world has long passed us by.”
The contract for the upgrade of the facilities for the university is being done by Coplan Associates. According to Mohammed Sambo of Coplan the contract includes the upgrade of all facilities at PTI. According to him, the new hostel when completed will accommodate over 250 students, adding that the administration block will be upgraded, as well as a new one being built. Part of the contract, Sambo said will be 66 new laboratories and workshops, which includes all new equipment.
