Shell’s Nigerian unit, SPDC, shut down the Afam VI Power Plant Plant due to a shortage of gas arising from the most recent closure of the Trans Niger Pipeline (TNP).
Tony Okonedo, spokesman for SPDC, said in a statement that Afam VI was shut down July 16, adding the plant was “available at 624 MW capacity, but supplying only 105 MW to the national grid due to reduced gas volume at the time of shutdown.”
The Trans Niger Pipeline system was shut- in last week by SPDC as a result of crude oil theft related leaks and this resulted in the deferment of 150,000 bpd. SPDC had just recently restarted flows through the pipeline before having to shut it in again.
Okonedo said the shut down of the TNP led to technical problems at the Okoloma Gas Plant which supplies Afam VI with feed gas so the Okoloma plant had to be shut down also.
“The company is striving to repair the TNP as quickly as possible, and restore operations that will enable power generation to resume at Afam VI,” Okonedo said.
