Shelling Takes Out Benghazi Power Plant

Sunday, January 10, 2016

Not only has Libya had to battle fuel storage tank blazes over the past week or so due to fighting at the ports of Es Sider and Ras Lanuf between ISIS militants and port guards, now one of its power plants has been hit by shelling. A power plant in Benghazi was attacked by militants on the evening of January 8 and continued on into January 9.

The shelling led to the shut down of one the plant’s units and started a fire; the fire was however extinguished later. The Benghazi plant supplies the majority of Libya’s power needs in the East.

Military Commander Fadhal al-Hassi, speaking to Reuters, said that ISIS fighters were responsible for the shelling.

Just one day before the power plant was hit and dozens of police recruits were killed in a truck bombing, which ISIS claimed responsibility for.
