Portovaya Gas Treatment Plant: Siirtec Nigi Contracts GL for Engineering Services

Vyborg, 25 May 2009 – As demand for natural gas grows worldwide, processors increasingly need reliable, compact, and cost-efficient treating solutions. Advanced and innovative technologies are in high demand. Being highly engaged in natural gas adsorption process technology, Germanischer Lloyd (GL) signed a major basic engineering contract with Siirtec Nigi S.p.A., an engineering and contracting company based in Milan. This is the largest Advanced Adsorption Process Technology (ADAPT) contract that GL has secured and will be for the largest silica gel gas processing plant ever constructed. GL supplies adsorption technology services for the new Gazprom Portovaya Gas Treatment Plant in Russia. GL will be providing services from now through to commissioning in December 2011. The Basic Process Design will be initially provided by GL and subsequent support to Siirtec Nigi through the detailed design, construction and commissioning phases will follow.

The facility near Vyborg in Russia will process six bcf/d (169.55 MMSm3/d) of natural gas in four silica gel adsorption trains to meet water and hydrocarbon dew point specifications. The treated gas will be compressed and routed through the new 1,200 km Nord Stream subsea pipeline across the Baltic Sea to Germany for gas supply to Western Europe, including the United Kingdom.

Based on over 35 years of experimental and operational experience, GL has proven expertise in the design and evaluation of adsorption systems for natural gas processing. GL’s service portfolio includes technologies in adsorption processing for the purification of high pressure natural gas streams. These services are encompassed under GL’s Advanced Adsorption Process Technology (ADAPT). Adsorption is a non-destructive, regenerable process that utilizes the affinity of materials such as silica gel and molecular sieves to selectively remove compounds (hydrocarbons, water, methanol, sulphur species and carbon dioxide) from high-pressure gases. Regeneration of the saturated beds is achieved by heating (referred to as Temperature Swing Adsorption or TSA). Within the ADAPT suite of services, GL provides process evaluation and selection, concept designs for planned facilities, basic process designs for commercial plants and optimization and performance improvement on operating plants.
