In Sudan the governor of Jonglei State, Philip Thon Leek, said that companies involved in exploring for oil in his state need to consider the needs and interests of the local community. Leek was unsure whether the oil companies would compensate displaced local communities as a result of oil exploration and development.
According to the governor his administration will enforce tough rules on oil companies to prevent environmental pollution. White Nile, a UK-based oil company and ASCOM, a South Africa-based oil company, are the only two companies exploring for oil in Jonglei State.
