RELEASE–TGS’ OYSTER Program a ‘Game Changer’ for Exploration Departments

Independents, Supermajors Alike Benefit from Unlimited Well Log Data

HOUSTON–Earlier this year, the Geological Products & Services division of TGS-NOPEC Geophysical Company (TGS) announced the initiation of its OYSTER program, an unlimited raster well log access plan. In the span of just four months, over 130 companies have signed up for OYSTER. This high commitment rate has led to unprecedented delivery of TGS well log data.

The OYSTER plan gives users of LOG-LINE Plus!, TGS’ online well log data search and access program, the ability to download an unlimited number of smartRASTER® logs for an annual fee rather than at a per-unit cost. The smartRASTER® is a depth calibrated well log data format first developed by TGS and now widely used in the industry. OYSTER access includes all of the company’s data in the United States and relevant offshore areas, such as the Gulf of Mexico.

Priced according to each individual client’s activity level, the OYSTER plan has been broadly adopted, with users ranging from multi-national super-majors with operations nation-wide to independent geologists focusing on a specific regional play.

“It has only been a couple of weeks since I have been working with OYSTER access, but already I have found it lets me ‘look over there’ at the characteristics of a particular zone of interest in another field or part of the basin without the incremental cost concern,” commented Robert Timmer, a consulting Geologist with over 25 years oil and gas experience in various basins from the Mid-Continent to the West Coast. “While the immediate impact of OYSTER has been on data access, I expect improvements in workflow will also follow.”

“OYSTER has surpassed our expectations,” commented Rod Starr, Senior Vice President TGS Geological Products & Services. “Geologists and other users of well log data have demonstrated their need to incorporate increasing amounts of well log data into their interpretation projects without the worry of budget constraints. OYSTER has shifted the paradigm.”

The TGS well log database presently contains more than five million well logs from key exploration areas in 21 countries worldwide. All of this data is available to clients via the Company’s LOG-LINE Plus! database which features online access, search tools and immediate download capabilities.
