France’s Total has renewed its license to explore off the coast of Western Sahara, despite the dispute over the region. Total said the extension was for a third year on the reconnaissance license covering the 100,000 sq km Anzarane block, which was first issued by Morocco in late-2011.
Total told Reuters in an emailed response that it had renewed the license “in order to complete the treatment and the interpretation of the seismic data acquired in 2013.”
Since Morocco first awarded the acreage to the French company it has conducted geological, seabed, and 3D seismic studies. There have been no plans announced the spud of a well on the acreage however.
Just recently Morocco, Total and Kosmos all pledged to abide by international standards and a UN legal opinion requiring them to consult local people on their activities.
