Tunisia to Supply Italy with Gas Circa 2012

Thursday, October 29, 2009

Italy will be receiving a portion of its natural gas supplies from a new North African country starting in 2012. Tunisia will export 4 Mcm/d of gas to Italy at the end of 2012 according to Khaled Becheikh, CEO of the country’s state-owned oil and gas firm ETAP.

"It will be 4 Mcm/d … starting from 2012, the end of 2012," Becheikh told reporters on the sidelines of the Energy Exchange North Africa Oil and Gas Summit in Tunisia.

The majority of the gas will be exported through the Transmed pipeline, which currently takes natural gas from Algeria via Tunisa and on to Sicily.

It is not believed that Tunisia will ever become a major exporter of natural gas as it currently imports to supply its own growing demand, but the government aims to increase its gas production through exploration and re-development of existing fields, in partnership with foreign partners.
