Uganda and DRC to form Joint Oil Commission

Thursday, October 11, 2007

Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are to form a joint oil commission to oversee oil exploration and exploitation in the Lake Albert valley where oil exploration is under way, the Uganda‘s state minister of foreign affairs Henry Okello Oryema said.

According to Oryema, the commission will comprise representatives from the two countries’ ministries of energy, minerals, foreign affairs, defense and land, and will monitor oil-related activity along the border.  "The commission will ensure that both countries live together peacefully to take advantage of the shared resources," he said.

The commission will also review the 1990 joint oil exploration pact and oversee the surveying of the common border to determine the location of the strategically important, disputed Island of Rukwanzi in Lake Albert. Representatives of the two countries are expected to meet later this month to work out a strategy to end the disagreements over oil exploration, an official with DRC’s Charge d’Affairs in Kampala has said.
